When pavers and steps fits a Manlius home
- A large rear patio off a 1970s houseA lot with room can take a big entertaining area. A large patio puts more load on the base, so the quote should state base depth.
- A patio meeting a deckA patio can wrap the foot of a deck. The town says any deck needs a permit, so ask the office how the patio edge and steps are treated.
- A front walk to replaceA paver walk with a clear slope and a deep base gives a clean, level entry. Ask for natural stone steps where the grade drops.
- A garden path through low groundPaths across wet lawn need a drained base and a gentle crown. Without them they can sink each spring.
Quick answers
Questions about pavers and steps in Manlius
Still unsure? Call (315) 640-3590 or send the short form.
Does a Manlius patio need a permit?
The town page lists decks and sheds but does not mention patios. Ask Manlius's Planning and Development Department, or your village office, with your size and location.
What does a deeper base mean for the price?
More stone, more compaction and more time. Ask the contractor to price the standard base and the thicker base so you can see the difference.
Can I put pavers around my deck?
Often yes, but the deck needs a permit and a patio at its foot raises questions about steps and slope. Ask the office before you book.
Pavers and steps in Manlius homes
No single soil dominates the Town of Manlius. The largest map unit, Niagara silt loam, covers only about 8.0 percent, with Cazenovia silt loam and Benson silt loam each near 4.4 percent. Mapped drainage splits 31.6 percent in the poorly drained classes against 30.0 percent well drained. For a paver job this means the town gives you no average to rely on. The soil under your own yard sets the base.
The paver standard puts a patio base at 4 inches of compacted stone on soil that drains well, and 2 to 4 inches deeper where cold-climate soil stays wet or soft. It also asks for compaction to 98 percent of standard density, notes that this may not be reached in very wet or fine soils, and says stabilizing the subgrade may be needed. Have the contractor tell you which side of that line your yard falls on.
When the soil is wet or slow
A drain pipe is worth discussing on heavy or slow soil. The standard describes a 4 inch perforated pipe set in stone and wrapped in fabric, and recommends it in clay or slow-draining soil under vehicle traffic. For a pedestrian patio it may not be needed, but the water still has to go somewhere. Ask where the patio edge sheds and where that water ends up.
On permits, the town page says sheds under 144 square feet need no building permit but setbacks still apply, and that any deck needs a permit. It says nothing about patios, so ask Manlius's Planning and Development Department, or the village office if you live there. Frost depth is a local number, so confirm it before any footing is dug, and call 811 first.

Here in Manlius
No soil covers more than about 8 percent of Manlius, so the base for a patio comes from your lot's own soil, not a town rule.
