When pavers and steps fits a Cicero home
- A soft yard where the grass never driesA patio can give you a firm place to sit, if it is built to handle the soil under it.
- Standing water near the back doorA raised, sloped paver surface can lead water away, but only with a drained base.
- An old patio that has sunk or heavedA rebuild with a deeper base is a hardscape job; repairing a slab in place is another trade.
- A walkway to a shed, garage or pool gateLong paver paths across wet lawn need the same base thinking as a patio.

Questions about pavers and steps in Cicero

Does Cicero's muck soil stop a patio?
It makes one harder. Expect a thicker base, fabric and possibly subgrade stabilizing. Ask the contractor to describe each.
Do I need a permit to excavate for pavers?
The town says a permit is required to fill, excavate or alter the grade of land. Ask Zoning and Planning whether your project counts.
How do I know the base is thick enough?
Ask for the stone depth in the written scope and whether compaction is done in 4 to 6 inch lifts.
Pavers and steps in Cicero homes
No other part of this service area asks as much of a paver base as Cicero. About 60 percent of the town's mapped soil sits in the poorly drained classes. Niagara silt loam is the largest single unit at 28.9 percent, followed by Collamer silt loam at 12.2 percent and Carlisle muck at 11.9 percent. County soil data puts the seasonal wet depth for Niagara and Rhinebeck silt loams at about 12 inches.
What a 12 inch water table means
That figure is a county measurement, not your lot, but it tells you why paver specs lean on base depth here. The industry minimum is 4 inches of packed stone on drained soil. On saturated ground in a cold climate, add another 2 to 4 inches. A contractor quoting the bare minimum in Cicero should be able to explain why.
Fabric comes next. Geotextile keeps base stone from sinking into soft soil and keeps the soil from pumping up into the stone. Ask if it is in the scope. Then ask about compaction. The spec targets 98 percent of standard density but admits that this may not be achievable in very saturated or fine soils, where the subgrade may need stabilizing. In muck, that is a real conversation to have before the first day of digging.
The town adds one more step. Cicero's Zoning and Planning page says a permit is required to fill, excavate or alter the grade of land. A patio that needs several inches of excavation or a raised bed of stone may count, so ask the office whether yours does.
Finally, schedule. Frozen base material should not be installed and nothing should be placed over frozen ground, so a late patio can become a spring one.
Here in Cicero
In Cicero the town's wet soil and a permit rule on altering grade both shape how a patio is dug and built.
