When pavers and steps fits a North Syracuse home
- A back patio that puddlesOn flat lots, water has nowhere to go if the slope is wrong. A rebuilt surface with a measured fall can fix that.
- A small stoop and a lawn beyond itA modest paver landing outside the back door gives you a place to set a table and keeps foot traffic off the grass.
- A path to a detached garage or shedA paver walk clears away the worn dirt strip and holds its shape under foot and wheelbarrow traffic.
Quick answers
Questions about pavers and steps in North Syracuse
Still unsure? Call (315) 640-3590 or send the short form.
How much slope should a paver patio have?
Guidance calls for a fall of at least 1.5 percent, directed away from the house. On flat lots, ask where the water will end up.
Is sandy ground easier for a patio?
Sand drains well, but it still needs compaction and an edge to hold the pavers. Ask the contractor how the base will be built on it.
Pavers and steps in North Syracuse homes
North Syracuse ground varies a lot. Colonie loamy fine sand covers 30.4 percent of the village, and cut and fill land another 10.5 percent. Niagara silt loam, a soil that holds water, covers 9.4 percent. Taken together, 22.7 percent of the mapped area has drainage problems of some degree and only 11.5 percent is well drained. A single yard can sit on sand at one end and wet silt at the other.
The first job for a contractor is to find out which. Paver guidance sets at least 4 inches of compacted base on well-drained soil and 2 to 4 inches more where the soil is wet in a cold climate, with the subgrade compacted to 98 percent of standard density. Ask what they found when they probed, and ask them to write the base depth into the scope.
Flat lots and where the water goes
Pavers should fall at least 1.5 percent so rain runs off, but flat land makes it harder to find somewhere to send it. The village annex puts the Bear Trap-Ley Creek district on level, built-up ground, and the hazard plan says its lowest areas flood about three times a year in events near the five year storm. If your yard is in that low ground, ask where a patio will shed its water, whether an edge restraint and drain are in the plan, and whether the neighbor's line is affected.
Call 811 at least two working days before digging. A footing under a step or a wall needs a frost depth that the locality sets, so confirm it with the Code Enforcement Department before a footing is dug.
Here in North Syracuse
In North Syracuse 22.7 percent of the mapped soil drains poorly and the flat district sheds water slowly, so a patio needs a slope and an outlet planned in advance.
