When stone veneer fits a Cicero home

- Foundation band showing under sidingWet ground can leave staining low on the wall, and a stone skirt hides it while adding height.
- Porch posts or an entry pillarVeneer on square columns is a self-contained job with a clear finished look.
- A fireplace chase in sidingStone or brick on a framed chase can match a new patio feature.

Questions about stone veneer in Cicero
Still unsure? Call (315) 640-3590 or send the short form.
Does veneer on a Cicero house need a permit?
The town's page lists installing fixed improvements among permit work. Check with the Zoning and Planning office about your specific wall.
What is the weep screed for?
It is the metal strip at the bottom that lets water behind the stone escape. The barrier laps over its flange so water runs out, not in.
Can stone go on if the ground is wet against my wall?
Only after the grade is brought to the clearance code requires. Ask how the contractor will handle that.
Stone veneer in Cicero homes
On a Cicero house, the stone is the easy part. The tough part is the base of the wall, because this town has the wettest soil in the area. About 60 percent of the mapped ground is poorly, somewhat poorly or very poorly drained, so water can be present at foundation level. That is why veneer clearances matter so much here.
Clearances and the screed
New York's residential code wants adhered veneer on stud walls to sit at least 4 inches above earth and 2 inches above paved areas, so ask the town what applies to a block foundation. In a yard that stays damp, a walkway pitched toward the house or a flower bed built up against it can erase that gap in a season or two. Measure before choosing the stone height, and ask how a too-high grade would be handled.
Behind the stone, the code wants the barrier to overlap the flange of a metal screed set at least one inch below the plate line of the foundation. Any water that gets past the face runs down and out over that flange. A job without it can hold moisture against sheathing, and the damage may not show inside for months or years. Put the screed and the barrier lap in writing, and ask whether two barrier layers will be used.
Cicero's median build year is 1980. If your house is from that era, ask the contractor to say in writing what sits under the siding, because the wall still has to be checked as dry and sound before anything goes on it.
Permit-wise, the Town of Cicero Zoning and Planning page lists fixed physical improvements to a property among work that needs a building permit. Ask whether a veneer wall qualifies. Timing matters too: mortar sets properly at 40 degrees or above, and Syracuse normally sees nearly 13 nights below that in October alone.
