When masonry cleaning fits a East Syracuse home
- White powder on a brick wallA pale bloom on brick that is more than a year old points to water getting in. Washing it off without finding the cause means it returns.
- A paver patio with a cloudy filmHaze on pavers can come from salts in the base or from sealer applied over damp joints. The fix starts with what is under them.
- Green or dark growth on a shaded wallNorth-facing walls beside close neighbors stay damp and grow algae. Cleaning gets the color back for a season, drainage keeps it.
- A sealer that clouded or peeledA film sealer applied years ago can trap moisture. The job is removal first, then a breathable product if the wall needs one.

Questions about masonry cleaning in East Syracuse
Still unsure? Call (315) 640-3590 or send the short form.
Will cleaning the white bloom off my brick make it stay gone?
Only if the cause of the moisture is fixed too. Otherwise the salts come back with the next wet spell.
Should I seal my brick after cleaning?
Not always. Ask the contractor why the wall needs it and request a breathable product, since a film that traps moisture can do more harm than the bloom.
Masonry cleaning in East Syracuse homes
More than half of the 1,464 housing units in East Syracuse go back to 1939 or earlier. If yours is one of them, its brick has had a long time to take on water. White bloom on a wall like that is usually salt carried out by moisture. Brick less than a year old often carries a harmless early bloom that clears as the wall dries. Bloom that appears or returns later points to water getting in or a drainage problem, and it is often worst in winter.
That means the question is not only how to clean it but why it formed. Poor drainage is a real possibility in the village, where 34.6 percent of mapped soil is poorly, somewhat poorly or very poorly drained. Wet soil against a wall, a splashing downspout or a stoop that slopes toward brick can each keep a wall damp. Ask the contractor what they plan to do about the source, or at least tell you what they see.
Sealing needs care. A coating put on without stopping the water can trap salts, and salts that crystallize inside brick can spall the face. If a sealer is used, ask for a breathable one and for the product name. Sealers on pavers also need dry joints and a dry base, or the surface can turn cloudy. Most sealers wear off and need renewing.
Timing matters after early October. Wet cleaning needs a spell of weather that keeps the wall at 40 degrees or warmer while it dries. At Syracuse airport, a normal October has 12.8 nights below 40, so a cleaning booked then may be better held for spring. If the problem is crumbling mortar or loose brick, that is a repair job, not cleaning, and it is a different contractor.
Here in East Syracuse
Brick that is more than a year old and still blooming points to water entering, and in a village with 34.6 percent poorly drained soil the water source is the first thing to trace.
