When masonry cleaning fits a DeWitt home

  • White streaks on a 1960s brick frontSalt bloom on brick this old points to moisture moving through the wall. The cleaning is the easy part, the source is the real task.
  • A paver patio that turned dull or whiteHaze after sealing, or white patches on new pavers, can come from damp joints or salts in the base.
  • A shaded north wall with green growthWet walls under trees grow algae. A gentle wash restores them, and trimming or drainage helps keep them clean.
  • Rust or de-icing stains by an entrySalt and rust marks near steps and rails need a cleaner that suits the stone, not a generic wash.

Quick answers

Questions about masonry cleaning in DeWitt

Still unsure? Call (315) 640-3590 or send the short form.

Why does white powder keep coming back on my DeWitt brick?

Because water is still reaching salts in or behind the brick. Cleaning removes the powder but not the cause, so find out how the contractor plans to deal with the moisture.

Do pavers need sealing?

Not always. A sealer darkens the surface, wears off and can cloud over damp joints, so ask why it is being recommended.

Masonry cleaning in DeWitt homes

With a median build year of 1963, a brick front from that era has gone through about sixty winters. White bloom on a wall that age is usually salt that moisture has carried to the surface. Brick under a year old can show a harmless new bloom that fades as the wall dries, while bloom that appears later points to water getting in.

Salts need three things: a source, water and a path out. The source is often mortar, concrete or soil touching the masonry. The largest soil unit in town is Niagara silt loam, and 28.8 percent of mapped soil is rated poorly drained, so wet soil against a wall or paver base can be a supply of water. Ask the contractor to look at grade, downspouts and splash before they choose a product.

Seal only when it helps

Sealers can help and can hurt. Sealing over live moisture can lock salts in, and as they crystallize inside the brick they can spall its face. On pavers, a sealer can go cloudy over damp joints or a wet base. Most sealers darken the surface and need renewing after wear, so ask for the product name and the interval in writing, and for a small test patch before the whole wall is done.

Washing is a seasonal task. A wash needs weather that holds 40 degrees or more until the wall is dry again. For a late-year booking, a spring date may be more sensible. If the real problem is loose brick or open joints, that is a repair job, not cleaning.

DeWitt brick from the 1960s is old enough that returning bloom signals water entry, so tracing the source comes before any sealer.
