Paver Patio and Walkway Installation in Syracuse
Much of the mapped Syracuse soil is well drained, which gives a paver patio a good start, but the base still decides whether it stays flat through the winters.

When pavers and steps fits a Syracuse home
- A cracked or sunken slab you want gonePulling an old pad and replacing it with pavers is a new hardscape job. Patching or leveling the concrete is a different trade.
- A back door with only a step down to grassIf your older house has only a small stoop and no place to sit, a modest paver landing and walk changes how the yard gets used.
- A muddy path from the streetA paver or flagstone walk gives a gate or side door a clean route, and it handles snowmelt better than packed dirt does.

How deep should the base under a Syracuse paver patio be?
Paver guidance sets 4 inches of compacted base as the minimum for patios over well-drained soil. Ask the contractor what depth they plan and why.
Does a paver patio need a permit in Syracuse?
The city's permit list does not name patios, but it does name retaining walls, decks and porches. Describe the plan to the Central Permit Office first.
Pavers and steps in Syracuse homes
Start with what the city's ground tells you. Only 1.5 percent of the mapped soil in Syracuse is poorly drained, and 54.2 percent is well drained. That is good news for a patio, but the base still matters. Paver guidance calls for at least 4 inches of compacted base on well-drained soil, spread in lifts and compacted to 98 percent of standard density.
The catch is that 21.5 percent of the city is mapped as urban land, so your own yard needs a look. Under those yards you may find old fill, buried debris or a former foundation, none of which the soil map describes. Ask the contractor to probe the area before pricing and to tell you what they found.
Before anyone digs
New York 811 requires a mark-out request at least two working days before excavation, and the utilities then have two more working days to mark their lines. Ask the contractor whether they will place the call. The permit office's list of permit work names retaining walls, decks and porches. Patios are not named, so describe a raised patio or anything attached to the house to the office before you assume either way.
Finally, think about the finished slope. Pavers should fall at least 1.5 percent away from the house. Ask where water will leave the patio and how the edge is held, because that detail is what keeps the surface level after the first thaw. Ask for the paver type, its thickness and the edge restraint to be named in the quote, so a later change to the scope shows up on paper.
