Quick answers

Questions about outdoor fireplaces in Syracuse

Still unsure? Call (315) 640-3590 or send the short form.

How big can a fire pit be in Syracuse?

The Fire Prevention Bureau says recreational fires may be no more than 3 feet across and 2 feet high, in a listed vessel, on a non-combustible surface and 25 feet from combustible structures.

Can a built-in outdoor fireplace go on a small city lot?

It can if the footing and clearances work, and the code has exceptions for small free-standing structures, so ask the Central Permit Office what applies. Bring a sketch of the yard and ask about the permit and the distance rule before committing.

Outdoor fireplaces in Syracuse homes

A fire pit on a Syracuse lot is mostly a layout question. Decide where people will sit, which way the smoke drifts and how far the fire is from the house, the garage and any wooden fence, then size the ring to fit. A seating wall around the pit looks settled, but on a small yard a loose ring of stone with a flat surround leaves more room to walk. A built-in fireplace needs a back wall and a chimney, so it suits the edge of a patio better than the middle of a lawn.

The Fire Prevention Bureau caps a recreational fire at 3 feet across and 2 feet high, in a vessel listed for the purpose, on a non-combustible surface and at least 25 feet from combustible structures. Measure from where the fire would sit before you choose the spot.

Built-in fireplaces are a bigger job

Plan the surfaces as well. Stone and brick around a fire face heat and winter freeze, so ask the contractor which mortar and stone they plan and how the top of the feature sheds water. A kitchen island is easier to scope than a fireplace, and the grill needs the same clearances from the house. Put the counter on the side away from the wind so the cook is not standing in smoke.

Mortar and fresh concrete both need mild weather to cure. If the start date slips past early October, ask how the work will be covered and protected, or plan it for spring. The footing under a masonry fireplace is a code matter: the residential code asks for one at least 12 inches thick, reaching 6 inches past the structure, below frost depth, with exceptions for small free-standing structures. Ask the Central Permit Office which applies to yours, and whether a permit is needed.
