Quick answers
Questions about masonry cleaning in Marcellus
Still unsure? Call (315) 640-3590 or send the short form.
Is white powder on old brick a sign of damage?
It points to water moving through the wall. The powder itself is salt, and the useful step is finding where the water enters.
How soon after cleaning can I seal?
Once the wall is dry and the water source is dealt with. Sealing a damp wall can cloud or trap salts.
How long does a sealer hold up?
Not for good. Most need to be redone after wear and weather.
Masonry cleaning in Marcellus homes
In Marcellus, 31.8 percent of the town's homes were built in 1939 or earlier. If yours is one of them, its masonry is old, and old masonry is porous. It takes up water and lets it out slowly, and the salts it carries are left on the surface as a white film. Bloom needs soluble salts, moisture and pores that let the salty water reach the face, so removing the moisture ends it.
How old the wall is tells you what to expect. Brick less than a year old can show new building bloom, which often fades as the wall dries. Bloom on an old wall usually means water is getting in, or ground and gutters are not draining, and it tends to be worst in winter. A cleaner who only scrubs is promising a return visit.
Seal only after the wall is dry
A coating put on before the cause is fixed can trap salts, which can then crystallize inside the brick and flake the surface. On paver walks, a sealer can turn white if the joints are damp or the base drains badly. Ask for a breathable product, and ask how long a coat lasts, because most sealers darken the surface a little and need redoing.
Timing is the Marcellus problem. Water-based cleaning should only happen when temperatures stay at or above 40 degrees until the masonry dries, and the airport normals for nearby Syracuse show that nights drop below 40 on 12.8 days in October. Ask when the work can happen and what the backup date is. Repointing loose joints or replacing broken brick is repair work, so that falls outside this site.
Here in Marcellus
White bloom on Marcellus brick, where nearly a third of homes are pre-1940, more often means water is getting in than that the wall is new.
