When masonry cleaning fits a Clay home
- White film on a brick wallSalt crystals on brick that keeps coming back point to water getting in, not a bad cleaning.
- A first-year patio that bloomedSalts from sand, grout or concrete under new pavers can surface in the first season and often fade.
- Dark, green or stained paversShaded patios in damp yards collect algae and grime that need the right wash.
- Sealer that peeled or turned cloudyA film coating that traps moisture can whiten or spall, and a different product is the answer.

Questions about masonry cleaning in Clay
Still unsure? Call (315) 640-3590 or send the short form.
Why does the white stain keep returning on my Clay brick?
Salts need water to travel, and wet ground or runoff keeps supplying it. Cleaning removes the salt on the surface but not the source.
Should I seal my patio after cleaning?
Only with a breathable product, and only when the surface and joints are dry. Sealing over a wet base can cloud the pavers.
When is it too late in the year to clean?
Wet methods work only if the air stays at 40 degrees or above until the masonry dries. After early October, that gets hard to promise.
Masonry cleaning in Clay homes
Three things must be present together for white bloom to form: soluble salts, water and pores that carry salt to the surface. Clay supplies the water generously. With 44.4 percent of the town's mapped soil poorly, somewhat poorly or very poorly drained, ground moisture can be what feeds the white stain on a brick step, a foundation wall or a patio.
Age matters for how you read it. On brickwork under a year old, the haze is called new building bloom and usually fades as the wall dries. If your house is near the median build year of 1978, it is decades past that, so a stain on the wall points at water penetration or poor drainage. Wash it off and the salts return unless the water source changes.
Sealer is the last step, not the first
A coating put on before the cause is fixed can trap salts that crystallize inside the masonry and spall the face. If a sealer goes on at all, it should be a breathable repellent that lets vapor out, applied only when the surface and the joints are dry. On pavers, a sealer can whiten over a wet base or damp joint sand, and most sealers darken the surface and need reapplying after a few seasons of wear.
Timing is the other Clay question. Wet methods are for days when the air holds at 40 degrees or warmer until the masonry has dried. In Syracuse, that points to May through early October, and the stretch between early summer and September is safest. A cleaning quote for a cold November week deserves a question about what product and what weather.
Crumbling mortar is a repair job, not a cleaning, and it belongs with a repair contractor.

Here in Clay
Clay's wet silt loam is a steady source of ground moisture, which is why white stains on brick and pavers return when only the surface is cleaned.
