When pavers and steps fits a Baldwinsville home
- A patio off the back of a village houseA paver landing can replace a cracked slab or bare grass next to the kitchen door.
- A front walk that has gone unevenNew pavers or natural stone steps give an older home a firmer, flatter approach.
- A side path along the river lotLonger paths in a flood-prone yard need a base and a drainage plan.
- A seating area for a newer buildIf a newer house has a bare lawn and a builder-grade stoop, a patio gives it a seating area.
Quick answers
Questions about pavers and steps in Baldwinsville
Still unsure? Call (315) 640-3590 or send the short form.
Does sandy soil mean a thinner base?
The 4 inch minimum applies over well-drained soil, so not much thinner. Wet spots or fill on your lot can change that.
Do pavers sink over time?
A small amount of settling is normal for a flexible surface. Ask the contractor whether the pavers will be set a little high to allow for it.
Who do I call before digging?
New York 811, at least two working days ahead. Your code office is the one to ask about permits.
Pavers and steps in Baldwinsville homes
Good news first. About 39.7 percent of Baldwinsville's mapped soil is well drained, and only 12.8 percent sits in the poorly drained classes. Arkport very fine sandy loam is the largest unit at 13.9 percent, with Madrid fine sandy loam and Williamson silt loam next. Next to the northern towns, where far more of the soil is poorly drained, a Baldwinsville patio has an easier subgrade.
Easier is not the same as automatic. The industry spec still wants a compacted base at least 4 inches deep under a patio, laid in 4 to 6 inch lifts and compacted to 98 percent of standard density. Soil maps cover the whole village, and your lot may have fill, a high spot or a wet corner that the map does not show. Ask the contractor what they found when they probed.
The river and the slope
The Seneca River cuts through the village center, so low yards near the water can behave differently from the sandy ground on higher streets. On any lot, the finished surface should shed water at a pitch of 1.5 percent or more, about 3/16 inch per foot, away from the house. Edge restraint should be rigid so the outer pavers do not drift, and ask what sand goes under the pavers.
On the permit side, ask whether a patio, steps, grade changes or edging need a permit. Call the Village Code Enforcement office if you are inside the village, or the Town of Lysander or Van Buren if you are outside it. Utilities have to be marked, so New York 811 asks for at least two working days notice before digging.
October is the turning point on timing: frozen base material and frozen subgrade are off limits, so a patio started too late becomes a spring patio.
Here in Baldwinsville
Baldwinsville's mapped soil is nearly 40 percent well drained, which eases a patio base, but it does not remove the 4 inch compacted minimum.
